Six a.m. Thursday morning. The phone is ringing. It can’t be good news.

“Is the rabbi there?”

“No. I am sorry. No. He’s out running.”

“This is Marsha. Please tell him that Henry is dead. He didn’t wake up this morning. He’s dead.”

“Oh, my God. I am so sorry. Of course. I will tell him as soon as he gets back. He will call you.”

Henry was forty-one years old. He had not been sick.
